An IEP Advocate will provide extra support to both parent and student. This tutor will attend IEP meetings with administration alongside parents in order to represent the student in a way that ensures respect and that the students’ needs are met. The advocate will also help secure the best possible IEP for the student—this includes informing parents of their rights under the Disabilities Education Act, the different types of accommodations and modifications available to students, and how to converse with the school district about the different types of special education services and tests available to the student based on their own specific needs. In certain cases, an IEP Advocate may have a deeper understanding of a student’s particular circumstance and will be there to help clarify and facilitate communication between all parties involved.
