A speech and language specialist will help to prevent, diagnose, and treat students with communication disorders. A tutor in this subject area will create an individualized study program which could include things such as: helping the student improve their voice, language and literacy skills, teach and work with alternative communication devices– like sign-language, help students to develop or improve their reading comprehension skills, and counsel students on how to cope with communication problems that happen primarily in school.
